MERDC - (Mobility Equipment Research and Development Center)

MASSTR & Dual-Tex "Original Digital"

Semi Gloss OD paint, white stars and numbers. M151, M151A1 and the early A2s all left the factory in this USGI standard base color.

MASSTR & Dual-Tex "Original Digital"

MASSTR & Dual Texture "Original Digital" the camos no one (or very few) has ever heard of.

The 8 variants of the camo that most every M151A2 and any M151s & A1s in inventory from 1975 on, wore at some time in their life.

3 Color NATO & Straight Tan

Markings - Registration Numbers, Unit numbers, tire pressure, etc..

MERDC - (Mobility Equipment Research and Development Center)

Current 3 color NATO camo, approved for installation 1983 onward. So in theory no M151 series vehicle owned by the US government ever left the factory in 3 color camo.

Straight Tan, no other color

OD - Olive Drab 24087

1957-1974 Olive Drab 24087

An authentic shade of Olive Drab used on almost all vehicles during the Vietnam War.

So all M151s, M151A1s, Ford M151A2s and the 71 contract AM General M151A2s should have left the factory in this color.

MERDC Paint Scheme & Paint by Numbers

In 1975 the trials were complete, and the familiar four-color scheme had been selected. Technical manual 5-200 "Camouflage Pattern Painting" was released. This contained the templates for color placement on all of the vehicles in service, as well as codifying regulations for how the pattern was supposed to be applied.

USMC Green -  Forest Green Semi-Gloss 24052. I believe this was the only color used on M151s before camo base color 34079

34079 - This was the base for MERDC

USMC used "Highway Gothic" as stencil font

USMC Yellow is Fed Std 595C - Yellow 23538

NO National Symbol (stars) were on USMC vehicles

USMC Markings discussed below.

Forest Green Semi-Gloss 24052 I believe this was the only color used on M151s before camo
Early "unit markings" the circle on the windshield is the WWII style of markings.

This section is full of both "by the book" info and lots of actual pictures of vehicles. Both new and well used with dates on as many as possible.

PLEASE NOTE there was many years of overlap in many cases. Where one base used the old system and another base the new. This is very common with USMC vehicles.

USMC Early and late Vietnam

Early Vietnam used the WWII style of marking vehicles. 1967ish the markings changed to the full unit symbols in red and yellow. There was also a variation with white main symbol.

ALL USMC M151 series vehicles were either 300000 or 500000 series registration numbers

USMC 1974 to end of service

Symbols went away for unit designation, and a system where an M followed by a 5 digit number referenced the specific unit.  DoDAAC or Dept of Defense Activity Address Codes

 Examples: M13210 = 1st MARDIV 2ND BN 1ST MARINES

M11120 = 1st MARDIV 1ST BN 1ST MARINES

There is a LONG list of these #s

ALL USMC M151 series vehicles were either 300000 or 500000 series registration numbers. By 1974 the 500000 series was being used. I do not have an exact date yet.

Oddity with markings - Never say never....

  • M151s with registration numbers that are not "correct" for an M151.
  • Other MVs with the 2B****, C, D, E, F... Etc. Registration number.
  • M151A1 with an NB0*** registration number. NB0 series #s did not come out till 1974 but I have at least 1 picture and a few military references to A1s that were given "new" much later numbers.
