The M151 Series vehicle was given or sold to other friendly countries since the beginning of the production. Many M151s can be seen in period photos in Vietnam used by the Australians, New Zealand, South Vietnamese, Canadians and others.
Everything from old stocks of US military vehicles sold to other governments. To direct sales (Via US government) from AM General to countries from Canada to Saudi Arabia. List of countries to follow in the future.
M151A1 - Canada used a good number of M151A1s during the Vietnam war. Details on if this was a true contract for vehicles supplied by the US to Canada, or some other version where US vehicles already in country were sold to Canada is still a bit of a mystery right now. Most vehicles are marked ICCS ( International Commission of Control & Supervision.
No pictures I can see, show any remnants of US markings, but these are all just period pictures. More info to follow as time goes on.....
M151A2 - Canada ordered 935 vehicles from the US. At this time the vehicles were being built by AM General under their first contract DAAE-07-71-C-0103. Also as a side note all the vehicles sold to Canada had the emissions control equipment. Also like most of vehicles supplied to other countries, the "Mfg. Serial No." on the data plate is just a simple set of numbers unlike the US where this is the registration or hood number. All are a 5 digit number and start around 43566 (earliest number in my database). It is unknown at his time for certain if these numbers were sequential through the Canadian contract. As a side note this is how AM General was marking the US data plates (pre emissions) 02A07172-10044.
02A07172 was the US registration number, 10044 was the AM General SN or control number for that vehicle. When emissions control came out the US data plates read NB08KV-36612. NB08KV was the US registration number and the 36612 was the AM General SN or control number for that vehicle. All the above registration numbers and SN changed from one vehicle to the next. Sooo.... It would appear that all the Canadian jeeps were simply built during the US contract. As I have US data plate samples that fall on either side of the generic 43000 to 45000 (I do not have exact numbers) SN range that the Canadian vehicles fall in.
The web site https://canadianarmsandarmour.ca/m151a2-mutt/ has a great deal of information on all Canadian vehicles, but the page referenced has a good detail on M151A2 use in Canada. This was put together by Canadian military vehicle collectors and historians referenced on the page.
